Crèche-going children in Mfuleni will start the new year in a new look facility after getting a much-needed facelift.

Umthawelanga Educare Centre was recently renovated by The Little Optimist Trust. The trust is a charity that raises funds for underprivileged and at-risk children in hospitals and poor communities.

The owner of the centre, Kholeka Hanisi said she opened the crèche in 2002 and while she initially received funding from the provincial department of Social Development, it was later stopped.

She said this affected the state of their building and operations.

“When it was raining the whole crèche would be flooded because the roof was leaking,” she said.

The centre now boasts a band new kitchen, two functioning toilets, a new roof and a big play and learn area.

Hanisi said she is happy that the 21 children will now be in a safe space, and she hopes the numbers will grow.

The founder of the Trust, Greg Bertish said they help the marginalised children in different communities. He said the renovations to the tune of R150 000 took two months to complete.

Bertish said they are hoping to work with more organisations and children that require medical support from poor communities.
