Despite breaking and losing two teeth during a scuffle with robbers, Nyanga crime buster Dumisani Qwebe is determined to continue his battle.

Qwebe, who is the secretary of the Nyanga Community Policing Forum (CPF), claims he was attacked and robbed while on his way to work, in Bonteheuwel on Saturday 1 February.

The Oscar Mpetha informal settlement resident says the incident occurred on the corner of Valhalla Drive and Robert Sobukwe Road. He was on his way to work when two men carrying knives accosted him. Although they had knives he said they suddenly opted to stone him. “I was shocked and also picked up stones and threw back at them,” said Qwebe. He said due to the intensity of the fight he ran to a nearby house for help. “Once I got inside the yard the house owner ran inside the house and locked his burglar bar and left me outside,” said Qwebe, who is a care worker at Lilyhaven Place in Bonteheuwel.

He said the attackers continued hurling bricks at him even though he was inside the yard. He tried in vain to evade the bricks, instead, he claimed the home owner shouted at him and ordered him to get out of his yard. “As they were stoning me my cellphone fell out of my jacket and they took it. They hit me with a brick on the jaw and I became dizzy. However, I managed to pick up two bricks and fought back and they ran away,” he said.

Qwebe added he went to a nearby training centre where he phoned his wife for help. He was then taken to hospital for treatment.

Qwebe said as a result of his injuries he is now unable to eat. “I can’t eat hard stuff. I only eat soft foods. I have four stitches on my cheek,” he said. Qwebe said the incident won’t deter him from fighting crime. “The attack made me stronger than before. I’m glad that the whole thing happened to me. Maybe another person could have died,” he said.
