Crime can be beaten

2018-10-11 06:00

Our society is under terror not because of the external enemies but because of internal wars that do not yield any positive results, instead spread fear to our social fabric.

Back in the day, people feared walking in the night because, naturally, people used to light are not supposed to walk in the dark.

Fear of attacks by other humans, though minimal, did not deter people from walking in darkness, though.

But human beings have become more dangerous than wild animals in their own realm.

The best, with animals, is that they kill for the purpose of survival, the worst, for human beings is that they seem to kill others for the sheer fun of it. Otherwise how does one explain the murder and rape of the innocents.

The current statistics about crime are a true reflection of the society in which we live. Harare, in Khayelitsha has one police officer for 745 citizens – against the accepeted ration of one cop for every 220 citizens. Four times more than the accepted norm.

Be that as it may, what we fail to explain is that the cause of the high crime rate is not necessarily about less police, but about the number of people who have economic means.

People commit crime for money on their hands. In areas where people work and have businesses, crime is very low. So the challenge lies not with the security cluster, but economic cluster.

If we fix that we can see positive results not just in the economy but on crime and many other social ills of society. Nevertheless, I still hold that the answer lies with us standing up, forging forward.
