LETTER: Criminals shouldn’t be glorified

2016-08-25 06:00

W e are so used to crime that we even praise those criminals who do not shoot their victims during robberies.

We describe them as professional thugs as if they have a right to just come and rob us.

It is sad that we often turn a blind eye to criminal activities until our loved ones become victims of crime.

Crime affects us all: we collectively need to fight it together. In order to achieve this, we must not steal or buy stolen goods.

Those who knowingly buy stolen goods are adding to the problem.

Let us be good citizens and lead by example. We need to protect each other’s property.

Crime statistics say there is a decrease in some crime categories, but this is misleading.

People on the ground know that crime is absolutely out of control in South Africa and even worse than has been reported.

We are no longer safe even in our homes. This is the reason we should blow the whistle when we see crime being committed in our neighbourhoods. We should also protect the whistle-blowers.

Don’t look the other way. If you do, you are also part of the problem. We can’t depend solely on cops to prevent crime. We should also report all those who take bribes and set the criminals free.
