A full independent forensic investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of fire that damaged a section of Shoprite at the Khayelitsha Mall.

In a media statement, the retailer said it is unclear what caused the fire that broke out at 07:00 on Tuesday 24 March and confirmed that no one was injured during the incident.

Jermaine Carelse, the City’s fire and rescue services spokesperson, added that firefighters managed to contain the blaze to the storeroom area.

However, he said partial damage to the deli and bakery was caused when a section of the wall collapsed.

Carelse added that no injuries were reported.

Khayelitsha residents who woke up to a black smoke described the incident as terrible.

Resident Phumla Memani from Town Two described the incident as terrible. She said it is going to hit local consumers hard in their pockets.

“My concern is, where are we going to buy food? We were depending on Shoprite. Now, we have to spend money for transport and go to Promenade Mall in Mitchell’s Plain,” said Memani.

She said she doesn’t want to go to big malls fearing of her life.

“The president has said we must take precaution of our lives and promote social distance. If I go to Promenade or Somerset West Malls I’m inviting sickness,” she claimed.

Memani called shop owners to urgently look at fixing the damage and have the store up and running soon.
