Dept committed to youth

This year’s 16 June marked the 42nd anniversary ever since 1976.

More than 15 000 students gathered at Orlando West Secondary School with the intention of participating in a peaceful march to the nearby Orlando Stadium. The demonstration was planned in protest against the use of Afrikaans as the medium of instruction at schools.

As the saying: “youth is the cream of the future”, young people have a significant role in water resource management. For the past decade, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has been championing initiatives for the youth in water through its curriculum-based programme, the 2020 Vision for Water and Sanitation Education Programme.

Under this programme, the DWS organizes annual national school competitions which include the South African Youth Water Prize, the Baswa Le Meetse.

The competitions are meant to recognize the achievements of the youth in their efforts to educate our society about integrated water resource management, promoting water use efficiency, as well as health and hygiene.

The competition runs from district to provincial and national offices. It has so far left a solid legacy, producing graduates in the field of water science.

Margo Adonis is one of the beneficiaries of the programme and is currently serving as Scientific Technician at DWS Western Cape, so has Nomfundo Zondi, who represented South Africa in Stockholm.
