Even though he was shot inside his tavern during an armed robbery- an incident that left him wheelchair bound- this could not deter a father two to accomplish his dream of becoming a furniture maker.

Calvin Mabuza,47, from Philippi, uses wood to make chairs, couches, coffee tables and other furniture.

He was forced to close his business, Lesapong Tavern, after he was shot in 2011.

The disability did not make me give-up on life. I decided to make furniture using wood.

“My tavern was doing great. It was very busy. I even created job opportunities for some youth in the area, but all that was cut short by thugs.

He said he was very depressed after the robbery.

“It is not nice to sit in the wheelchair. I was very depressed, but I decided to start this business to keep myself busy.

You get sick when you sit around doing nothing. Sitting in wheelchair is very challenging. I encourage other people with disabilities to find something to do,” he added.

Mabuza said the case against the five robbers- whom he knew and easily identified- was dismissed in court due to “lack of evidence.”

He said they got away with about R20 000.

Mabuza said he gets assistance from youth in the area.

I get orders from different areas of the city,” Mabuza said. He said he was taught wood crafting by his grandfather.
