Learners and staff at Mkhanyiseli Primary School in Nyanga were delighted when the Donald White-Mandla Ndwanya Memorial Foundation visited the school to donate uniforms and a Jojo water tank as part of a back to school and water saving campaign last Friday.

The uniform consisted of 33 pairs of shoes, 21 tunics and 28 grey trousers.

The Donald White-Mandla Ndwanya Memorial Foundation was formed in 2012 by Magurtha White after the passing of her husband Donald in that year.

Magurtha’s daughter Takiyah was married to Mandla Ndwanya from KTC in Nyanga. And when Mandla died in 2016, the White family decided to include his name in honour of his memory, to provide support to learners from his neighborhood of both Nyanga and Gugulethu. School Principal Malusi Dyantyi described the contribution as a relief to the school and the parents.

“We are extremely excited. We believe that the contribution will have a significant impact(on learning).

Some parents do not afford the full school uniform and whatever that the learner will get will make a difference,” said Dyantyi.

He said the donations were fitting as his school accepted mainly learners from disadvantage communities.

“Even though our school is accommodating learners mainly from poor communities, but their parents are eager for their children to acquire better education,”said Dyantyi.

He said they usually even received surplus uniforms from donors, which they would keep for the benefit of children whose homes perish in shack fires and other disasters and thus lose their clothing and stationery.

Nomha Tyhulu, the foundation’s co-ordinator said: “We donate school uniform twice a year especially shoes. And we will come back in August again for more donations to help disadvantaged learners.”
