Residents at SST informal settlement in Town Two say the stench caused by drainage systems next to their shacks is a health hazard.

The informal settlement is next to the busy Govan Mbeki Road and residents use the road’s drainage system to discard wet waste from their homes, causing the system to smell.

A few metres from the drain a group of informal traders sell meat, fruit and vegetables .

A resident who did not want to be named said they have no choice but to dump their urine and used water in the drain. She said they do not have drainage systems in their homes.

“The drains get blocked all the time because people not only throw water into them but rubbish as well,” he said.

He said it becomes dangerous for their children who get infections from the water because they play in the dirty water.

He said it gets worse on hot days as the smell becomes very strong.

He added that they would love to move to another area for their health and to protect their children from the vehicles that use the road.

A trader who wanted to be known as Mohamed said they sell food but it becomes difficult at times because of the smell coming from the drains.

“How do you expect someone to buy food from you when you are situated close to a stinking drain?” he asked.

He said something needs to be done because people continue dumping stuff in the drains.

Ward 93 councillor Thando Pimpi said some of the shacks in the informal settlement are situated on a road reserve and therefore things such as drainage systems and toilets can’t be installed.

He said people opt to use the drainage system which was meant for rainwater next to the road and it gets blocked all the time.

However he said there are plans to move the people to another area where they can get all the basic services.
