Duo nabbed after truck hi-jack

A man and a woman have been arrested in Crossroads following the hijacking of a delivery truck last week.

A 26 year old man from the area in Nyanga after he and his accomplices’ accosted the furniture delivering truck.

“A Bantam Bakkie allegedly stopped in front of the truck, four unknown men came out of the bakkie and three men pointed them with firearms forced the occupants to come out of the truck and drove away with it full of furniture.

Police were called and they spotted the bantam bakkie with furniture and the driver of the bakkie was injured during a shootout,” said Nyanga spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

The man was hospitalised while the truck was found abandoned with some furniture in and around it in Bambanani Street in Crossroads.

“Police further recovered a fridge and other items hidden inside a house in the same street. A 17-year-old woman who hesitated to open the door for the police to search the house was arrested,” said Sitshitshi.

Two cases of the possession of stolen property were opened and a case of hijacking.

Meanwhile 130 suspects were arrested during a two day swoop by police in Bishop Lavis, Elsies River, Gugulethu, Manenberg, Nyanga and Philippi East.

According to police the 29 of the culprits were arrested for the possession of drugs, 15 for dealing and possession of dagga, 12 for assault GBH, three for rape and two for house robberies.

“Others were arrested for crimes ranging from assault common, housebreaking and theft, theft of motor vehicle, robbery, business robbery, interdicts and possession of stolen property.

Seven firearms were confiscated and seven suspects apprehended for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Three firearms were confiscated in Nyanga, another three in Manenberg and one,” said Sitshitshi.
