Hundreds of children from different educare centres in Gugulethu gathered at the NY 49 Stadium last week Friday for a sports day.

At least 27 educare centres participated in the event which was also attended by the parents.

The stadium was the hive of activities with children playing various games including hula hoop, ten pin bowling, jumping castle, touch your partner, sack racing and athletics.

Educators said the objective of the event was to train children physically and mentally.

Chairperson of the Gugulethu Early Childhood Development Forum and Uluntu Pre-School principal Nombulelo Mzimkulu said the event had been hosted annually, butthey now intend to host it three times a year.

“We don’t see it as a sports day, but part of giving young children an opportunity to socialise with each other and also learn to share,” said Mzimkulu. She said they are also trying to introduce the children into a new environment.

She says most of the time the children are always indoors and they don’t have time to socialise with their peers.

She urged parents to bring their children to pre-schools to keep them safe. “As pre-schools, we are training learners to be ready to attend school. We build them holistically and train them to be independent,” said Mzimkulu. She stated that pre-schools are better places to keep the children than to leave them with relatives and friends when the parents go to work.

Parent Nombulelo Makhura from Barcelona informal settlement described the event as educational and entertaining for children. She urged other parents to support their children.

“The event inspired the children and gave them a chance to play with other children. It also improves their communication skills and boost self-esteem,” said Makhura.
