LETTER: Elect leaders you know

2016-03-03 06:00

Our country is approaching one of its most important elections ever.

I personally see the municipal elections as the most important elections. For the problems and challenges we are faced with daily, begin within our communities.

And they are too important to me because I don’t stay all over the country, but I stay within my community.

And I strongly believe that empowered communities means empowered country. People shouldn’t underestimate municipal elections, for these can either develop or destroy our communities.

Different communities experience different challenges. However, unemployment is a common problem in every community. Unemployment levels are high among the youth. The youth is the future. And it will always be a fact. So if the youth is mostly affected, then the country has no future.

As a leader of a community youth organisation, I take youth community issues very seriously. I know and understand what our youth are faced with daily.

Many of them already lose hope while in high school. For they see their siblings sitting at home being unemployed, despite all efforts they made to attain their matric, hoping for a better life. So if they witness those who walked the road before them being unemployed and helpless, they also lose hope.

With the municipal elections approaching, we will witness different political parties visiting communities as if they care about the difficulties faced by communities. But we know all they care about is securing votes. I urge political parties to try to promote and represent the best interest of people during this elections. For many, mere promises will now be made, officials will be attending community gatherings, listening to the complaints and needs of the community. Once elections over, they visit us no more.

Many times even candidates that are brought forth are more active in their parties, than in community issues. I urge political parties identify people who are already engaged with their communities for such positions. For if we alected someone who is known to the community, they will definitely make a huge difference.

To this person it will not only be a job, but it will be a commitment. We need determined and innovative community leaders.

Such leaders will bring initiatives that will combart unemployment and empower our youth. And when the youth is empowered, the community is progressing, and a progressive community will give birth to a prosperous country.
