Vangate Mall, with FivesFutbol, will be hosting their second annual u.12 soccer tournament on Saturday 23 March.

The tournament is open to all community clubs. While entry is free, space is limited, and teams are urged to act quickly to be part of the day which will see a special legends game involving Cape Town City. There will also be a host of giveaways. Last year’s tournament saw Silverlea Primary School walking away with top honours, with Plantation Road Primary School ending as runners-up in a “winner-stays-on” format, which will be adopted again in this year’s tournament.

Children who have not turned 12 by the day of the tournament are eligible to play and team managers are expected to provide a birth certificate or copy of a birth certificate as well as a photo for each of the eight players in their squad (five players, one of whom is a goalkeeper, along with three substitutes). “We just want to keep it fair and don’t want to compromise any teams. We will be rewarding first place for the team and a runner-up prize. The reason we are doing this again is because our community have a love for sport, specifically soccer. We have identified, in this last year, that we want to do this again,” said Bilqees Gabier, marketing manager at Vangate Mall.

Gabier confirmed that they have not booked out all the spots for the tournament, and that registration will take place at 08:30 on the day of the tournament.

“All the teams need to be at the court before 08:30 on the day. We are looking for teams from all over Cape Town,” she said.

Various sponsors have come on board to add spark to the day, with some providing giveaways throughout the tournament, while also entertaining the spectators. Local soccer hero, Nathan Paulse, is expected to deliver the opening address to the teams on the morning of the tournament.
