A young man from Khayelitsha is living in fear after fake news surfaced on social media claiming he had tested positive for the deadly Covid-19 virus.

Yamnkela Ngwadla (20), a Grade 12 learner from Joe Slovo High School in Khayelitsha, said someone took a picture of him from his Facebook page and shared it saying that he had escaped from the Khayelitsha District Hospital after he was diagnosed with the virus.

“I saw a picture of mine which said I had corona virus doing the rounds on social media,” he said.

Yamnkela said he went to a local police station to report the matter but was allegedly told to report the matter in court.

He said it is very painful for him because he does not have the virus and people think he does.

“People in my street do not want to come close to me and some people are threatening to kill me.

“I can’t even go out of my home,” he said.

The post is in direct contravention of government regulations on the virus and the spreading of fake news.

“Anyone that creates or spreads fake news about Coronavirus Covid-19 is liable for prosecution. Verify the information before you share it,” the statement read in part.
