LETTER: False promises of freedom and poverty turn us into living dead

2016-04-14 06:00

The oppressed masses have nothing to celebrate but everything to mourn.

Every day a part of us dies and rot in jail. We have looked poverty in the eyes for far too long, it is now a part of us.

Our conditions do not allow us to lead a normal and healthy life.

I do not think we were created to live in slums, that are infested with all sorts of vermin, disease, lifelessness and poverty.

We are knocking at devil’s door just to make a living.

Like crabs in a barrel, that is how we live, and even luckier to make it out alive. We have come to think this is normal.

Townships are dripping with blood, campuses have become war zones, we walk around in pain and rage and hatred and we don’t even realise it.

Physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually we are dead; purposeful existence has been sucked out of most of our people.

The soul of democracy’s hypocrisy lives on, leaving us down and out.

We have become mere walking corpses, waiting for our own burial.

Buried in the slums and overcrowded jails, because we don’t even posses the land in which to bury our own.

We have lost everything and anything that has ever mattered to us; our land, spirituality, culture, history and mental faculties.

We are distracted by Western Culture to everything that is irrelevant to our own development.

We will never breathe clean air until all that belongs to us is back in our possession. We have been reduced to people that have to fight for survival in their own country.

We smile and hold hands with our oppressor as he feasts on our wealth. Still, we have the audacity to say we are free, when we are actually dead.
