A young fashion designer from Site B is taking the fashion industry by storm. Nolitha Qhuma, who hails from K section, launched her new clothing brand Rea Nubia recently. She said after she had been hustling for years, in 2014 it was “serious business”.“For two years (2012 and 2013) I was doing odd jobs and fashion design on a part-time basis,” she said. She had to drop out of school due to financial challenges. “I studied fashion design at Cape Town College of Fashion Design in Plumstead in 2007. It was supposed to be a three-year course but I had to drop out in my second year (2008), again because of financial problems. “In n 2010 I went back to North Link College (Bellville Campus) doing the same course which I finished in 2011,” she recalled. Qhuma described the industry as challenging as it frequently goes with the season. “As a fashion designer, you need to be creative and always come up with fresh ideas. And I intend is to build an empire. Something that is going to outlive me,” she said. She wants her brand to be recognised internationally, she said. “Currently, I’m supplying Malaki in Stellenbosch and Poppishop in Cape Town,” she stated. Some of the clothing is custom-made.Her designs include dresses, blouses, skirts, suits, jackets, wedding dresses and occasional wear. Qhuma said the prices depend on what the customer wants on that particular time. She has customers from all over the country. “I do have customers in Johannesburg, Parklands, Langa, Khayelitsha, Makhanda, formerly known as Grahamstown. Last month I was at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda for the third consecutive time to showcase my brand,” said Qhuma. People can order by contacting her on 078 490 7232.
