In order to motivate high school learners an to spur their teachers on, a group of young people in Lower Crossroads established an empowerment organisation.

The organisation known as Fearless Minds Mentorship Programme has already had an impact on the learners and teachers. This was evident when outstanding members pupils and teachers were awarded on recently.

According Funelakhe Duze, chairperson and founder of Fearless Minds, the programme existence was necessitated by conditions and struggles of students in matric, the lack of information in high schools in the township.

“We seek to grow student interests on academics. To come up with new ideas in trying to motivate the students,” he said.

The organisation arranged for former learners to come and share their experience at varsity to motivate the high schoolers. to organised other

“We took an unexpected turn and we decided to award one of the best , hardest working teachers at Phandulwazi High School as the Teacher of the year.

There was a tie between Mrs Belinda Nombewu (Accounting) and Mr Sipho Nabe (Life Science),” he explained.

Ultimately, Mr Sipho Nabe won and commented: “I am emotional right now... I appreciate what you you’ve done for the school. I know this is not only for me but my colleagues who strive to better the lives of students through academics”. he said.

Duze said working with the young adults from different universities helps to expand our own horizons hence we able to offer valuable advice to young brothers and sisters.

“From the career choice, university application, Bursaries the list is endless.

Our goal is to reach Phakama Senior Secondary School and Vuyiseka High School. We look to create relationships between these schools and hopefully in future hosts events like Veledictory together,” he noted.

He had some words of advice to the students as well.

“Being the one of the best students in your school may not be guarantee you a place in University therefore it is important for Matriculants to know how other students from other schools performs.

Matriculants from the townships tend to be complacent, we motivate them to keep their foot on the pedal through out the year.

They’re competing with the rest of the Nation some from private schools for a place in Universities”

Fearless Minds Secretary General and co-founder Siyanda Funda said that it wasnt easy to run the programmer since its inception a year ago.

“We started something out out of nothing. This was a tough year but we managed to achieve our short term goals, we offer this opportunity because it was never offered to us. We cant fall in the same trap,” he said.

He said that they were already plannning for the future.

“Next year we aim to do more. We assisted students with applications, created email accounts for them, gave them study material, offered a tutoring during June holidays, we went to universities around Cape Town for open days,”

He said they felt satified by their efforts as the learners have showed gratitude.

“The change of attitude its amazing, they know what they want to study next year. I am happy to be part of Fearless Minds family, we’re trying to change our community indeed ‘Change starts with you but it doesn’t start until you do’.

Sibenatha Xinela, student, walked away with the Most Improving Matriculent.

“This award has given me motivation.I am motivated to do more than this. Because now I know I can and I will keep on Improving” she said.

Another learner, Nolonwabo Patu, said that the whole years has been an informative journey she did not regret.

“I want to thank Fearless Minds. They have always been there for me since the first day of matric.encouraged me to bring the best in me.

“Fearless Minds one of the people who played a vital role in the person I am today and I am going to be in future. It’s not because I’m clever that I have been named the most outstanding student but it is the support system I get from you,” she said.
