On Tuesday we celebrated what has come to be known now as Human Rights Day.

It is a day that many of us hold a different view to what it is supposed to be called.

I have just one question though, has the day lost its effectiveness or has it been hijacked? Tell me your views or your experiences.

These days, in order to be politically correct or to avoid confrontation, many people have opted to just keep quiet and go with the flow.

This is happening right across all spheres in our daily lives.

We see things unfolding right in front of our eyes and yet we do not act, for fear of reprisals.

People do or say some of the worst things and yet we are told to keep quiet because so and so in high office is doing it and so we must just accept the status quo.

What kind of a society are we busy creating?

There has been incidents where somebody has committed an heinous crime and people fear to come out and give evidence because they are scared of the backlash. It seems as if we leave in fear, which phenomenon is beginning to make us live miserable lives.

Singa maphakuphaku. Take for instance the information that was circulated around about impending taxi violence and the fear it brought to everyone. Fear and more fear.

Kids terrorize our areas and we call them gangsters, yet later on go to court to defend them.

I am very perturbed by what I am seeing all around us. It seems as if we are no longer in control of our destiny. Anyone can manipulate our feelings and tell us what to do. I had the belief that through this new dispensation we would see truly liberated minds, free of coercion.

Are we really free? This leads me to quote from Steve Bantu Biko: “Black man, you are on your own”.

We seriously need to find our mojo and start living positively because if we don’t, then we will be played like a yoyo by anyone for their own benefit.

We need to wake up and live! Our lives are precious and we need to champion our destiny. Let us do away with blindly following and believing things that are not important.
