Nyanga police are looking forward to court appearance of five suspects who were arrested on Tuesday on different charges.

According to police the men were arrested after conducting crimes ranging from hijacking, possession of hijacked cars, rape and robbery.

“A 43-year-old man was arrested at about 05:10 in Browns Farm. Police officers were on patrol when they were tipped off about a BMWX5 parked at a certain address in the area.

Members rushed to the address and as they were approaching, they saw a man who started running when he saw the police van, the man was chased after and caught in another shack,” said Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

She said that when questioned about the vehicle the man claimed that it belonged to his friend but police recovered a driver’s licence which belonged to a victim that was robbed of his wallet and two cell phones on Friday last week in Govan Mbeki.

“The suspect was then arrested for the possession of a hijacked vehicle and stolen property.

.In a separate incident, two suspects were arrested for a case of murder which occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Vlei, Sweet Home Farms.

One of the suspects, a 23-year-old, was arrested on Monday after mid-night and the second one, 24, was arrested when he came to visit the 23 year old,” she explained.

The two men had allegedly shot and fatally wounded a 37-year-old man in Vlei, Sweet Home Farms.

“The deceased was found lying between the shacks with gunshot wounds on his body. The motive is suspected to be robbery because the victim’s cellphone was missing. Two other suspects, a 36 year old woman and 26 year old man were also arrested at about 02:00 for robbery with a firearm in Nyanga,” said Sitshitshi.

The suspects aged between 23 and 43 will appear in Athlone Magistrate Court for murder and possession of a hijacked vehicle and the two 26 and 36 will appear in Philippi Magistrate Court on robbery charges.

She also added that four teenagers appeared in Wynberg Magistrate Court on Tuesday for allegedly raping a girl in Crossroads.
