Five Khayelitsha women have been arrested for stealing groceries at a local school.

According to the police the group was arrested after food started disappearing at Isiphiwo Primary School.

“On Friday at approximately -5:00, police officers swiftly arrested women whose primary responsibility is to cook for disadvantaged school children. The information led the police to different houses where they allegedly stored the stolen groceries,” said spokersperson Captain Siyabulela Vukubi.

Police recovered grocery that was estimated at R15000. Five women aged between 35 and 53 were arrested and appeared at the Khayelitsha Magistrate Court after being charged for being in possession of stolen property.

“We strongly condemn incidents of this nature where people are given job opportunities instead they want to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor. We furthermore applaud our members for a job well done as this will send a clear message across the communities that anyone who steps out of the mandated job will be brought to book,” said Vukubi.
