It was a thrilling game between Friends and Baymont legends during the opening round of the Township Legends league match at Lingelethu stadium, in Site C, on Sunday 9 February. Friends team, which is based in Site C, lost 5-4 in a tense game which left supporters frustrated.

The league features teams around Khayelitsha.

Friends coach Lwanda Maqobonga praised his boys by saying they were superb.

He said they came to the match as the underdogs. “It was our first game of the league. No one was expecting us to display that kind of football. The spirit of the players was high and they wanted to win but it was unfortunate that they were on the losing side,” said Maqabanqa.

He said they showed a better performance than last season. “Even supporters were surprised the way our players were playing. We used to be walkovers to other teams. The mere fact that we scored four goals tells you that the game was tight,” he said. He urged the supporters to come in numbers to support them. “Our challenge is most of our players are working. They don’t have enough time for training,” he stated. Out of 20 teams in the league Friends is in position 14 while Baymont from Khayelitsha is sitting on number seven.
