Mzuvukile Ntlonte, so-called leader of the demolishers, said claims by Kanase that he has bought the plot are far from the truth.

“It is not true that the church has been there from 2008. The late Mam-Tshoto erected the tent in 2013 for a June 16 event. He(Kanashe arrived afterwards) started the church. He did not buy the plot.

“We need the plot for a park. He(Kanashe) has fingered me as someone who led residents to destroy the church.

I have to go to court together with other residents on Thursday since he opened a case against us. We are about 10 residents whom he opened the case against,” Ntlonte said.

South African National Civics Organisation’s Nobuntu Gwanqa said the church ignored letters they wrote to them to vacate the plot since last year.

“We want the site. He (Kanase) ignored three letters since last year. We then took a decision to demolish the church. We want the park for our children here,” Gwanqa said.

Nonyameka Titi, a church member, said the church has done many good things for the community.

“The church gives food and clothes to the needy in the area. It also intervened when the area was terrorised by thugs. It made a good change in the area. The treatment that we are getting here is bad because we got permission for being here,” Titi said.
