Ward 89 Councillor Monde Nqulwana said the pond was last cleaned during the 2014/2015 financial year. He said the City had stopped using an excavator to clean the area because of funds.

“People built their shacks all over and the excavator could not access the pond,” he said. Nqulwana added that the City had resorted to using people to cut the reeds, however, because of the risks posed by the reeds, the plan failed, said Nqulwana.

He promised to engage the City’s Department of Roads and Stormwater to find a way to clean the area.
