The woman at the centre of the storm, Nolufefe Mgidi, said the man was an “abusive” person.

“I broke up with him because he was always beating me up, especially when drunk. Sometimes he would threaten to stab me. But I never thought that he could do this (stab) to other people,” she sobbed.

Nyanga Police Station spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi confirmed the incident. She said the man was arrested on Friday 15 February on an attempted murder charge.

“The woman was asleep when she felt someone stabbing her. And when she woke up she saw the suspect standing on top of her, stabbing her repeatedly. The victim pleaded to the suspect to stop but he continued stabbing her, threatening to kill her and other relatives,” said Sitshitshi.

Community leader Bulelani Mbinda said that they wanted the suspect to rot in jail. “We don’t want to see him here again,” he said.

He urged police to keep the suspect in jail for his own safety. “I don’t know what will happen, because I’m not a prophet, but I promise something will happen.”
