Police have arrested 14 suspects, who are believed to be gang members, for the murder of an 18-year-old boy in Harare.

According to a statement by provincial police, the boy was a learner at Kwamfundo Secondary School and was wounded during an altercation at 35 Block on Wednesday 15 February.

Provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says eye witnesses reported seeing a group of youths, who kicked the door open at the residence of the deceased.

“One of the suspects stabbed the deceased and whilst he tried to escape, he was stoned and beaten with a panga. The deceased was admitted to hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. During a subsequent follow-up investigation a total of 14 suspects aged between 17 and 25, allegedly belonging to the Amavura gang, were arrested for their involvement in the assault. It is alleged that these gang members are causing conflict at the school and also committing crime within the community.”

Harare police spokesperson, Captain Siyabulela Vukubi, says a couple of years ago there was an ongoing conflict between two teen gangs known as the “Vuras” and “Vatos”. He says the gangs consisted of boys who had dropped out of school and other young men in their 20s.

“We have not heard about them for a long time until now. About three years ago there were many incidents where the two groups would fight and assault each other but it went quiet.”
