Genuine leaders fill bellys last

2017-06-01 06:00

What is so difficult about leaders challenging the delivery of services?

You are elected to a position on the basis of having the best qualities for the job and get a mandate, backed by a budget, to get it done.

Your job is to manage the budget to handle that mandate.

What is so complicated here?

Nothing really, but when people start thinking about their own stomachs, friends and family and how they can live the good life at the expense of other people’s services, their job becomes difficult.

Some go into government and immediately attach their personal needs to their posts, so by the time people are waiting on them to deliver, there is little or no money left.

Self-importance is a disease.

It eats away at the will to do the right thing for the people.

A genuine leader must refuse to fill up his own stomach, knowing people wait on him to deliver.

His or her mandate always begins and ends with the people.

When we say the people must come first, it’s not just a slogan but a call to duty. The job only gets done when people and their needs are made a priority over everything. That’s leadership.
