An elderly woman from Samora Machel, in Philippi, uses aftercare to teach young children from the area about Christianity.

Nomawethu Mnweba (66) said she started the Sisambulo Women and Children Development Project last year as an aftercare and as an organisation for elderly women in the neighbourhood.

“I used to work at a crèche in Crawford which is where I started working with children,” she said.

Mnweba said when she realised she was not getting any younger she decided to give back to her community by starting the organisation.

She said among other things as a Christian she teaches the children about Christianity.

Mnweba said she noticed that most children did not speak the languages they were taught at school properly and felt with her knowledge she could help them out.

Mnweba said the parents are very supportive of what she does because not a lot of schools still teach the values of Christianity.

“They see even the way I bring up my own children that Christianity is very important,” she said.

She said at the moment her organisation is not registered but she is working on the registration.

“I am looking after 10 children in my aftercare and they are not paying a cent because I love working with children,” she said.

Mnweba said there is a lot of improvement in the children’s languages at school after she started working with them.
