Scores of senior citizens from various areas in Khayelitsha converged on Sinovuyo Old Age Home in Ilitha Park for their annual Christmas party last Thursday.

Participants included seniors from Masibathande in Site B and Masithandane in Harare.

The event was not only about good food, but also about traditional music and dance.

Event organiser Nolungelo Ophila said they wanted to create a space for elders to socialise and share experiences.

“We decided to come together and have fun as we prepare to close for the end of the year,” she said.

“We also want the community to see that there are senior clubs in our communities, where elders can come together and share their problems and have fun at the sometime.”

Nonyameko Ngaba (69) from Masithandane urged all the seniors to join local clubs in order to deal better with some of their challenges.

“There is no stress here. We forget all the wrong doing that our children and grand children are doing to us at home. We enjoy ourselves here. We do crouching, singing and exercise.
