Golden oldies deliver

Their legs may have been long rested, but when they were required to make a comeback on the field they delivered entertaining football.

Retired soccer players returned to the playing field on Saturday 23 February, showcasing their skills to the community in a mini soccer tournament at Lwandle Sports Complex. Four teams took part in the competition, which saw a wide range of skills on display of players, who once graced the field.

The final match saw Indwe FC lock horns with Strand FC and, as can be expected, the players were tired and cramped at times, often missing the ball.

In the end, the Indwe charges triumphed, winning the encounter by two goals to one.

Masande Skelenge, who played in midfield for Strand, said he enjoyed being back on the field. “It was a great experience playing against players I used to play with and seeing that they are still in good shape,” he related.

“We enjoyed ourselves and would like to encourage healthy living through this tournament, as many of us are still very active.”

Sandile Bavuma, who represented Indwe in the tournament, said the tournament was well organised.

“Everything went well and this gave us an opportunity to pass our experience to the youth playing soccer today,” he said. “We enjoyed ourselves, but our legs are not as quick as they used to be. It was fun and we will definitely do it again.”

Mzukisi Madondile, chairperson of Helderberg Local Football Association, believes the organisation can establish seniors’ league. “We do not want to stop these matches for senior players,” he said. “We should develop a league for seniors, but get players who are over 30 to create a space for younger people in league soccer.

“You can’t be older than 30 and still play in a competitive league, as there is no chance of your turning professional. It is time to give young people a chance.”
