LETTER: Good leaders are as rare as hen’s teeth

2016-07-28 06:00

It’s almost the end of the globaly celebrated Mandela Month.

A month in which we remember one of the greatest leadersthat ever lived, Tata Mandela.

A few weeks ago, I was reading his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, and he mentioned a leader that inspired him; Booker T. Washington.

Many will argue and say, well, it was easy back then to be inspired to become a great leader, because there were many great leaders.

I think the most important lesson we should learn from the past leaders, including our own Tata Mandela, is that they all had the courage to do the right thing.

It is not always easy to do or stand up for the right thing, because it might cost you your life and in his case it cost him 27 years behind bars.

Nowadays, most people will ask what is in it for them, even before they do good.

Knowing the right thing and not doing it, is simply cowardice, whether you are the guy around the corner or the president. It’s sad that we don’t have a lot of courageous leaders nowadays to look up to, who will stand for the right thing regardless of the outcome. Now, my fellow South Africans let’s work together and do the right thing to make our country better for all.
