She began as an aspirant praise singer but has now become established as one of the most talented writers in the gospel music industry.

Qhamisa Mpayipheli, a singer songwriter from Queenstown has been the pensmith of popular songs such as Bethusile’s ‘Nyange lemihla’ and Thembinkosi Booi’s ‘Siyakudumisa’. to mention a few.

“I started singing at a very young age; from being a soloist at schools I attended to singing with local choirs in the community. I have lived all my life with music as a companion.”

She said coming from a village with absolutely no resources at all, this meant her dream of becoming a musician that would influence the world was far-fetched.

“Because of my genuine love for music, I joined any music group I could come into contact with including a local gospel choir, which was three hours away from my village,’ she reminisced.

She was also fascinated by the soothing sounds of a keyboard.

Qhamisa said she continued with the group until it fell apart due to personalities within itsself.

She then tried to convince the remaining members to stick it out, only to discover that the bone of contention was the embezzlement of funds in the group.

Even as the group disbanded, Qhamisa didn’t stop pursuing her dream, though.

She carried on and sang alone in the streets and nearest towns until she was discovered by a music coach who took her off the streets.

The coach, a Mr Kolo, managed to influence a lot of sponsors and promoters to help the young girl from the villages.

She did not disappoint and worked very well with all the references.

In one of the events that Mr kolo helped organize, Lusanda Mcinga and her spiritual group was in the line up.

It was, she said, her determination to succeed that through such challenges, she managed to release a debut album in 2015.

‘My foray into the industry began with me writing songs for various artist but it was Nyange lemihla that launched me.

That song established my career as a song writer.

This is the same song that made a lot of artist be very eager to work with me.

I was then approached by a lot of artists, including Nosipho Daniels whose title track song was also composed by me.”

The album was nominated at the Cape Town Victory Awards in 2014.

She has also worked with Thembinkodi Booi, and composed three songs for him titled: Akaludelanga, Siyakudumisa, Uzundenze.

She has also composed for M-Siya who was also nominated at the Crown Music Awards in 2015;

For M-Siya she had composed a song titled Onke Amadolo.

She has also worked with Iphazimula by composing a song titled Ebenezer on their album. She is still writing for a lot of artist to date.

In 2015 she finally released her own album titled Simbiza Ngamagama’ which was produced by the legendary Sizwe Zakho.

The 12 track album did well and she believes that there is still much to offer from her.

‘There are a lot of different sounds on it ranging from Pentecostal influenced sound to jazzy and traditional sounds,’ she said.
