Nyanga Police have launched a manhunt for a man accused of hijacking a liquor truck and shooting at police on Monday.

According to police the truck was hijacked at around 11:00 while it was making deliveries . The suspects were driving a blue Toyota Avanza.

“Police followed the information and while on the way they met with the owner of the truck also searching for the truck but while they were busy the alleged Avanza approached.

One suspect took out a firearm and pointed a firearm through a window towards the police and the owner and started shooting,” said Nyanga spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi.

She said the Avanza was chased through the streets of Browns Farm until it reached Govan Mbeki Road between Browns Farm and Nyanga where the suspects started shooting at the police again.

“The driver stopped the Avanza, jumped off the vehicle and started running but while running he dropped the firearm, a 9mm berretta, loaded with rounds of ammunition and a pair of white tekkies.

When police approached the vehicle they found two males, one who claimed to be the driver but alleged to have been hijacked by three suspects of which one got off in Browns Farm,” she said.

A second man was found with gunshot wounds and was declared dead by paramedics on the scene.

“Police received information that some of the liquor was off loaded at a shebeen in Mpangele Street in Browns Farm.

When they arrived at the address they recovered the liquor, some in the fridge and some cases were still packed inside a boot of a Silver Hyundai Elantra.

A woman was arrested and is in detention.

Through the use of a chopper the truck was later recovered abandoned in Village 4 in Browns Farm, more cases of liquor were found still inside the truck.

Cases of hijackings, possession of stolen vehicle and stolen property (liquor) and an inquest docket have been opened.
