The Gugulethu Sports Complex was filled to the brim on Sunday and those responsible are hoping that their coffers will be too.

The Gugulethu Basketball team juniors hosted the fund raising games in an effort to see them registered to the Cape Town Basketball League for the upcoming season.

The team invited local teams as well as would be sponsors on the day with the aim of raising the required funds.

According to organiser and coach Ndzuzo Manona the team needs around R 8000 to register its six divisions to the league. That is the boys and girls under 12, 14 and 16s by the end of March.

“We decided to host a fund raising day so that we can get assistance as we are struggling financially. We are struggling with the basic things such as balls and kits.

We would like to have every member of the team to have their very own ball. That would go a long way towards the improvement of our players,” said Manona.

Along with fellow organisers Nomakhosazana Ndlotyeni and Nontsikelelo Njongwana, Manona said that they were very pleased to see a large turnout at the basketball court.

“The parents are very crucial as they support is very encourages for the children. For many of our children here it was the first time that they played at a filled facility with fans cheering on. Its great for their moral,” he noted.

While it was fun and games the organisers were biting their nails with the hope that sponsors would avail themselves.

“Last year the local sports and recreation department sponsors with the fees and we would love if they could do the same this year as we have seen the growth in local interest.

We also encourage local business to also step up to the plate as it would go a long way,” he said.

Manona urged those that can support can contact him on ndzuzomanona@gmail.com.
