Gugulethu’s 60th Anniversary celebrations will be launched with a mass prayer service at the Sports Complex today, beginning from 9AM till noon.

Hosted by Gugulethu Development Forum (GDF), the celebrations will place on a monthly basis, with each marking a selected theme.

January has been earmarked as a back to school month, culminating with the Mdingi family and Flash Mobile Vending handing over school shoes and stationary to 60 children at Andile Primary School in New Crossroads.

February is noted as the month of love and The Gift of Givers Foundation will hosting a “Valentines Party” for 60 elderly citizens.

The Gift of the Givers Foundation is the largest disaster relief organisation on the African continent.

March will see Human Rights activities with Kasi Find Your Fire Campaign in an attempt to inspire the 2018 Matric students in making the right choices in life.

GDF chairperson Samora Nompunga said some of the activities will be communicated in the course of the year.

“Gugulethu is one of oldest townships in the country and through this we will be showcasing its talent and possibly to contribute more to the Western Cape and the country at large,”he said.

He said personalties who were raised in Gugulethu were approached and have committed to coming and ploughing back to their community.

“We have a rich history and we expect sons and daughters of Gugulethu to come home and celebrate this milestone,” Nompunga said.

He said the GDF, as community umbrella body will use this event to establish “networks and contacts” who may help with development in the future.

“ The GDF also calls on the community to reclaim the pride of Gugulethu while celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Gugulethu (1958 – 2018),” he added.

Deputy Minister of Police Bongani Mkongi and Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula are amongst the dignitaries attending today’s launch event dubbed as ‘Prayer Against Crime and Socials Ills’.

The event will be broadcast live on Umhlobo Wenene FM during the “Lelika Yehova Ihlabhati Nenzaliseko Yalo” programme hosted by the airwave stalwart Nomthunzi Vuza, popularly known as Mama ka Ma Asie by her adoring listeners, at 9am to noon.
