Being a student at Fezeka(old building, near kwa Khikhi) was both fun and a challenge.

Fun because as boys besisazi okokuba ngoLwesithathu uya eskolweni uphethe iswekile kuba kukho izidudu zomqombothi ezifihlwe kwelahlathi lisesikolweni.

You see, the police used to raid people who brewed the beer and they used to hide umqombothi kwelihlathi.

Ihlathi covered the area from the current gate towards kwaKhikhi around the property towards what is now Landsdowne Road.

So you can imagine your parent bekuncoma for ukukhuthelela iskolo, ube wena usazi esona sizathu.

It was also a challenge being a pupil there because you had to run the gauntlet yase shops eNY3A.

Funeka uphephe ooSkhitshane nabanye abanixhwarhele ezivenkileni bezakunitumisa.

Eish, the price of education. On the other hand- as much as boys were expected to fend for themselves in these situations- if utsotsi dared to touch intombazana yaseFezeka.Iyhoo.

The principal would call all the boys to assembly and ask them to clean the shops of @ezinkukuma zingcolisa iivenkile zase 3A.

Kuzakuphunywa ngegwijo kuqeqeshwe ngemvubu, phofu ongazazi nalapho zithe gqi khona, kunye namaswazi akhiwe kwalapha ehlathini, yaye yonke into engathi sisikoli apha endleleni ibitshayelwa, ukuyokuma ngeevenkile.

Fezeka girls always felt protected, and this built oneness amongst students.

But then, the government wanted to build a railway line that “would cross directly where the school was”, we were told. Then part of the building burned down. Urhulumente ngurhulumente sbali, awuphikisi. Thus one day we carted our desks down Ny71, then into Ny50 and onto Ny49 to our new home, Sokhanyo Primary School.

We had to platoon with a lower primary school. Ja neh. Only Forms 1 and 2 were moved at that point. Since there were no trucks to move the furniture, we spent the first two days moving between our old school and the new one. When all was done and dusted. It hit us that we were now bereft of our Wednesday trea, isidudu.
