As the Western Cape police are battling hardcore gang battles in the Capeflats, Langa is hit hard by gurans - a name given to a fight match between two feuding gangs. On Saturday a body of 16-year old boy was discovered outside a yard in Joe Slovo whilst another 17 year old male was stabbed to death in Lerothori Street.Police spokesman Sinathi Joni said eight suspects were arrested for the two separate murders.Joni said it was "through responsive and thorough investigation that police were able to apprehend the suspects."Five male suspects aged between 20 and 21 years, including a 13 year old boy appeared at the Bishop Lavis Magistrate Court on Monday October 23 for the first murder whilst two 16 year olds appeared for the second murder.Langa Community Police Forum deputy chairperson, Xoliswa Makana, praised the police for their work but stressed the need for "a broad based intervention programme.""Parents are taking a defensive stance when it comes to their children yet they know that they are involved in this gurans. Perhaps we need divine intervention because we are seeing young children butchering each other," said Makana. She challenged Social Development and other state departments to "help Langa fight this scourge". "People are living in fear because these children are dangerous," she said.
