A new and different sporting code is being introduced in the township of Khayelitsha.

Handball, which is similar to soccer but hands are used to play, recently came to light in Khayelitsha.

The first match was played between the Khayelitsha Handball Club u.15 team and Cape Stars u.15 team from Delft on Saturday 3 August.

Khayelitsha won the game by 16 goals to 15.

The game is played by six players plus a goal keeper with two halves just like in soccer but the duration differs. Founder and coach of Khayelitsha Handball Club Siphamandla Zaleni said they are introducing the sport in the townships because they want to grow it.

He said in Khayelitsha there is only one club and three schools are involved.

He said they have both boys and girls teams.

Zaleni said those interested in getting involved in the sport can come to Thusong Centre in Khayelitsha where they practice from Monday to Friday from 16.30 to 18:00.
