This past week I came across two sets of happy people.

Sometimes one gets surprised to see happy individuals in this day and age as everyone seems to be seething under theior breathes.

We no longer smile and people are just ready to retaliate or vent their frustrations on somebody else.

Maybe its is our domestic problems or current Mzantsi ‘angaangs’ caused by the high unemployment rate.

Talk of unemployment. One of the happy persons I met was busy trying to make ends meet trying to make a fast buck or two.

We are all aware of hawkers who are selling this and that at every traffic circle.

We were recently warned about winding down our windows at these circles due to the smash and grab habits of others. In some instances, acid has been thrown in the faces of drivers distract their attention.

I want to share in this stranger’s joy.

I saw him holding what looked like a traffic fine.

Curious to know what all the fuss was about, I asked what else made him happy.

To my surprise, he pointed to the fine and paraphrase him, hes said: ‘is die fine wat ek sallie betaal nie’ .

I packed up laughing and I could rightly share in his laughter too.

I never knew that there are fines for selling stuff in street corners and now I know.

Maybe they will start fining people who beg at street corners if that is not already happening.

My one silly question is how are these people expected to pay up because the mere fact they are selling in street corners is to make ends meet.

I suppose if you do that against the by-laws then you are bound to suffer the consequences.

Xasihleba ecaleni kodwa abona bantu abawonwabelayo amatikiti ngoonotaxi, they are forever smiling after receiving one.

As I had said in the opening sentence, the are two sets of people.

The rightfully happy people are the fans of Orlando Pirates, who have all the reasons to be happy after securing a spot in the final of the Nedbank Cup.

This happened against all odds with some people from the other camp vying for our blood. But mara this weekend is very crucial for Happy People to make it to the top 8. It would be a first, like my English club Arsenal too. Enjoy your rest of the week.
