Joy was written all over the face of Zwelijikile Gqozo, a disabled man from Site B in Khayelitsha after he received a donation of a wheelchair from the EFF on Monday.

Gqozo,30, heaped praise on members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) for fulfilling a promise they made to him recently.

PR Councillor Ncedo Silas, said they were touched to learn of Gqozo’s situation after visiting his home recently.

“He did own a wheelchair once, but it broke down and he could no longer use it. He has been struggling to move around. This is about ensuring that we come and assist our community members who are in need,” Silas said.

Gqozo, who also suffers from fits, said the wheelchair will go a long way in helping him.

“I cannot walk so it will help me to go around. I feel very happy,” he said.

His mother Nofezile Gqozo, 67, said the wheelchair is a relief for her.

“I was really struggling when I had to take him to the clinic.

I have had to hire a car which cost me R100 even though the clinic is just few metres away from my house or I had to ask my neighbours to ferry him by shoulder if I did not have money for the transport,” she said.

Tsepo Khoaeane said he approached Gqozo’s family after seeing them struggling to move him around the street.

“It is our duty to identify those who need help in our area and we will do that by doing home visits.

There are those who go to bed on empty stomachs and they need help.

We will continue to identify more residents who need quick intervention,” Khoaeane said

Khoaeane is the EFF candidate in the municipal by-elections to be held on Thursday 15 November, to fill the void left by Ntombebala Mquqwana, an ANC Councillor who was forced to resign amid allegations of fraud. The ANC is also contesting the ward.
