Western Province Modern Pentathlon will host the rapidly growing and popular Global Laser Run City Tour on Saturday 9 March at D’Aria in Durbanville.

Young and old are invited to come and try their hand at the sport.

“The aim of the Laser Run City Tour is to give the sport exposure to the public and invite them to give it a try.

“Laser Run is one of the building blocks of Modern Pentathlon under the governing body of the UIPM (Union Internationale de Pentathlon Morderne) and athletes can compete at national level and receive their South African colours and compete on the world stage,” said Riaan Campbell, event organiser and member of the WP Modern Pentathlon Committee.

The sport not only requires exceptional fitness but a steady hand and eye to shoot the target.

The athletes have 50 seconds to hit their target five times with a laser pistol from a distance of 5m for seniors and 3m for juniors.

Only after successfully hitting the target does the athlete run for 400m. The seniors do this a total of three times while the juniors only do it once. “We invite everyone to come and join in the fun or just watch the athletes. We do provide the pistols. Athletes only need running shoes and clothes.

“It really is a fast-paced and dynamic sport and we hope that through events like this we can grow the sport in the country,” said Campbell.

Athletes need no previous experience of the sport. Registration is from 09:00 and the event starts at 10:00.
