Preparations are underway at the Lwandle Sports Complex as the Helderberg Rovers under-18s look towards doing well at this year’s Engen Knockout tournament.

The team’s in the last 16 and will face the team that knocked them out in the semi-finals of last year’s tourney, Old Mutual Academy.

The tournament features mostly academies, including Ajax Cape Town

Rovers’ head coach Eric Sabole knows what’s at stake – the name of the community and the R15 000 prize money for winners.

“We are ready,” he said. “We have been preparing for this match for the past three weeks. We know what to expect, as we have been at this stage before.”

Sabole also knows they are facing strong teams with top-class facilities.

“Football is football when we meet on the field, and your conditions don’t matter,” he pointed out. “What matters are the results, and we plan to deliver.”

The team face Old Mutual Academy on Friday and, should they advance to the next stage, they will play another game on Saturday.

The team’s captain, Yanga Nocuze, says silly mistakes cost them the match last year.

“The stage is different from what we are used to, and I think we forgot about what happened last year,” he says.

“Teams get physical and everything is quick, because this is a knockout tournament.”

Nocuze says Helderberg Rovers plan to bring the trophy back home this year.

“We have been playing friendlies preparing for this match, and we won them all,” he says. “We want to win the tournament this year.”

Football fan Sapholethu Ndamane says he believes in the boys. “They are well prepared and I think they are capable of winning the tournament,” he says. “We will be rooting for them all the way.”

The match will be played at Vasco FC in Parow tomorrow (Friday 22 June).
