After being a featured artist for other, well-known artists in the country, Thandeka Gqunta, has finally decided to fly on her own.

Thandeka, as she is affectionately called by her fans, has released a debut album titled Amazulw’avumile.

The ten track album was recorded at FG Studios in Jozi.

She has re-arranged an old song previously performed by Shongwe and Khuphukile Saved Group, himself a legendary gospel artist, whom Thandeka described as an artist that she is “so in love with.”

“I am surprised that my fans loved the song... I am so in love with Shongwe, his music blesses me,” she added.

Her music journey of started at Mfuleni Primary School Choir, where she was a lead singer.

She continued with her lead singing talent at her church, the Dutch Reformed Church and for Masego Mfuleni Adult Choir which sang choral music.

Thandeka then eloped to the Assemblies of God church, which period marked the start of her gospel music career.

In 2000 she then moved to Johannesburg with her family.

She became a backing artist for the Soweto Gospel Choir, was a lead singer in the Kabelo Mabalane song titled “High I go”, and she backed for Nonhlanhla and worked with many other artists under the Triple M Studios label.

“It has been a long way coming...that is why I am now saying Amazulw’avumile (the heavens have approved).

“The album was released about three months ago, but I have already been booked for many events. There are many bookings in the pipeline.”

The response that I am getting is positive and I am amazed by the way God is helping me,” Thandeka said.

She is due to share the stage with Amadodana Asewesile, Butho Vuthela and other artists in a concert in Swaziland at the end of this month.

“The doors were closed for me even though I was living side-by-side with big names. There was a time when my family would go to bed on empty stomach, but I continued worshipping God. My situation was bad, but God answered my prayers and opened doors for me,” she added.

The album is available at BellStar Music in Bellville, Assemblies of God church, and in Hillbrow .
