Hefty sentences for armedAsanda Village robbers

Lwandle police detectives Detective Constable Wynand Carelse and partner Detective Sergeant Marius Erasmus have been hard at work catching criminals and securing convictions.

Three men accused of house robbery in an incident which occurred on 4 March last year in Xaki Street, Asanda Village have been sentenced.

They entered the house of the complainant, pointed a firearm at him, tied him up with rope and forced him to lie down on the floor and covered his head with a blanket.

They then started searching the house and took four cellphones and a small amount of cash, and fled the scene. No shots were fired.

Carelse and Erasmus, who are very significant figures at the station, worked hard to bring the three accused to book shortly after the incident.

The three accused were charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances and remained in custody until their conviction and sentencing. One, Asemahle April (18) pleaded guilty in court, and on 18 June was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

The other two co-accused also later pleaded guilty and were sentenced on 6 September. Ongeziwe Gwadu (17), a juvenile, was sentenced to 12 years, of which four are suspended for five years.

The third accused, Siphosethu Ndzele (29), was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. Lwandle acting station commander Captain Bibiana Madala praised the members for their good work in bringing the perpetrators to book.
