Heinous murder case postponed

A Zimbabwean man accused of the heinous murder of his girlfriend in Asanda Village in February, briefly appeared in Strand Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 13 May.

Thirty-year-old Morris Nyamandi is accused of murdering Andiswa Zide (26) in her backyard shack in Saphepha Street in the early hours of Saturday 9 February (“Killed by loved ones”, City Vision, 14 February).

He allegedly hacked the young woman to death with an axe and severed one of her legs, leaving their four-year-old and three-month-old daughters with their mother’s mutilated body.

Nyamandi, who was arrested by Lwandle police later that day, has since made several appearances. But he seemed more relaxed when he arrived in the accused’s bench this week. Waiting for his name to be called, he quietly sat in the benches and looked to the back before bowing his head.

This week, there were no signs of any bruises, stitches or injuries to Nyamandi, as was the case in his previous appearances (“‘Killer’ to remain in custody for now”, City Vision, 28 February).

The state prosecutor informed Magistrate Mbulelo Sidyiyo that the docket had been sent to the Director of Pubic Prosecution (DPP) for a decision on whether to transfer the case to a higher court, but said the DPP had informed them that the case must remain at Strand Magistrates’ Court as the investigation is still ongoing.

The state asked for a short postponement and Nyamandi was informed through his Shona interpreter. After agreement from all the sides, Sidyiyo postponed the case to next Wednesday (22 May).

It is believed Nyamandi confessed to hacking Zide to death when police arrested him.
