My name is Lunga Njikazi, I’m 24 years old. I live in the rural KwaZulu-Natal.

I grew up in Cape Town and was a scholar and matriculated in Cape Town.

In 2015 after finishing my culinary arts certificate at 1000 Hills Chef School, I got employed at Stretta Cafe in Hillcrest.

It is an awesome working environment, but two months down the line something strange started happening to my legs. Both of them started to swell in a weird way and it would take a while for the swelling to go down. It felt like something tight like socks had been holding them.

My boss and I tried to google solutions to stop the swelling, but weren’t successful. I always say it would be better if I had found out the problem earlier because I took quite a while to feel sick and that started with a few allergies and strange cravings.

One second I’d feel like licking dirt only to feel like having Morvite the next until the maas proved lethal. I remember eating a bowl of ‘maas’ in the morning and then feeling weak and losing sight. Next thing I woke up in a dialysis ward in King Edward Hospital still blind, only to regain sight thre days later and learnt that I had fallen into coma twice.

I now am renal failure patient who gets Haemodialysis twice a week at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital where they pump 4 litres of fluid out of me because I can no longer urinate.

I’m blessed to be in the programme, but I’m not in a state of working and only a kidney transplant will help me at this stage.
