The City of Cape Town is offering a R50 000 reward to anyone with information about the shooting of a Metro cop.

Constable Ben Koopman (53) was shot dead outside his home in Eerste Rivier, Cape Town on Monday afternoon.

It is believed the men behind his shooting were trying to rob him. Western Cape MEC for safety and security Dan Plato condemned the shooting.

“I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the officer’s family, his wife and three children, as well as his friends and colleagues for their loss.

“I trust the South African Police Service is already conducting a full investigation. The cold-blooded killing of a member of the law enforcement fraternity cannot be left unpunished.

“I urge the community of Eerste River, or anyone else with information, to report it to their nearest police station. If they would like to remain anonymous they can call Crime Line on 08600 10111.

“We know that the reward will not bring Constable Koopman back to life. However, we hope that it will encourage members of the community to come forward.”

Metro police deputy chief Yolande Faro said: “The City’s Special Investigating Unit is assisting SAPS with the investigations and we are offering a reward of R50 000 to anyone with information.”

Western Cape police spokesman, Brigadier Novela Potelwa, said: “An attack on any law enforcement official is an attack on the state.

“As the management of SAPS in the province, we are concerned about these attacks.

“Our investigators are working tirelessly to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.

“We urge communities to come forward with any information that could assist us in our investigation.”
