Two young men need assistance to help change the lives of young girls in Gugulethu and the surrounding areas.Wonke Mapeyi (27) and Thulani Sam (29) came up with the idea of collecting sanitary pads for those who can’t afford them because of financial difficulties. The two men do not belong to any organisation but saw the need to help girls from their communities and decided to do something about it. “We decided last year December that we have to do something to try and help those in need in our communities,” said Mapeyi. He added that a lot of girls miss school when they are having their period because they can’t afford the sanitary towels.Mapeyi said he has also witnessed girls dropping out of school because they would be made fun of in front of others. “Not being able to afford such necessities infringes on one’s human right to dignity,” he said.Mapeyi said some would even use other methods when they are on their period which puts their health in danger. He said he does not understand why government would have condoms for free everywhere but girls must buy sanitary pads and they are both as important.Mapeyi said they have identified a few schools in Gugulethu and surrounding areas where they will be donating the pads but can’t say which schools. He said they have started collecting the pads from individuals who have been answering to their call but they are hoping to reach more people so that they can distribute the pads on Wednesday 1 April.Mapeyi appeals to anyone who would like to help them, including businesses, to call him on 067 831 4279 or Sam on 081 457 4582.
