In the police’s efforts to reduce contact crimes in the Western Cape, an 18 year old suspect is appeared in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning regarding a hijacking case.

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk the suspect was arrested on Monday afternoon two hours after he and two accomplices had hijacked a vehicle that was stationary in Lansdowne Road, Browns Farm.

The three had approached the vehicle with two on the driver’s side and the third one on the passenger’s side.

They pointed a firearm at the driver and instructed him and the passenger to get out of the vehicle, then pulled them from the vehicle and drove away towards the Browns Farm area. The vehicle was later recovered where it had been dumped, with two tyres removed, at Minxi Street in Browns Farm. While guarding the vehicle the members were tipped off about the suspect who had brought the vehicle into the area and the suspect was promptly arrested. The suspect might be linked to another hijacking incident which occurred on the same day in the same road with the same number of suspects and modus operandi.

Meanwhile a 20 year old woman from Browns Farm is also expected to appear in the same court this week after she was arrested yesterday for house robbery.

On Sunday, this suspect went to her friend’s house, accompanied by two men unknown to the complainant. The complainant was asleep when she heard a knock on the door and the voice of her friend. She opened the door for her but the friend came in with the two men.

When the victim asked who the two men were the friend did not respond. Instead, they took the victim’s flat screen TV, two pairs of shoes and a bag and left.

Police followed up on the suspect and arrested her yesterday at about 12:40. She will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court this week on a charge of house robbery. Police are still hot on the heels of the four outstanding suspects from both cases.
