The game of basketball has emerged victorious as young lads from various parts of Gugulethu gathered at the locals Sports Complex for a fun-filled tournament.

The tourney was organised by Gugulethu Junior Basketball team trio of Ndzuzo Manona, Khosi Ndlotyeni and Nonkululeko Jongwana.

It featured Nyanga East’s Cape Waves, Hout Bay Snipers, Tafelsig Eagles, Camps Bay High, Langa Kings, Heideveld Assassins, Hustlers and the Sokhanyo Primary School team.

“We are trying to develop basketball in the townships and through these tournaments, we are seeing growth in the game,” said Manona.

Khosi Ndlotyeni hailed the tournament as a success and added that youngsters were getting “to grips with the game”.

“It was exciting because children from our townships were exposed into playing others from affluent areas. The experience they gained here will help them in the future,” said Khosi.

Nonkululeko Jongwana said the highlight of the tournament was to witness the fostering of relations.

“They were all competitive but still enjoyed the game. It was a social cohesion and integration exercise on the sports field,” said Nonkululeko.

Hustlers won the under 16 tournament when they overcame a resilient Camps Bay side.

Meanwhile Gugulethu’s Basketball National League’s Vincent Ntunja will host coaching clinics at American International School in Tokai on Saturday March 18.

The clinics are hosted by African Grassroot Hoops and basket ballers will be transported from the Gugulethu Sports Complex from 8am on the day.

Only boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18 years will be accommodated.

Contact Vincent Ntunja on 0717132274 or Giovanni on 0796735509.
