Residents of Nyanga and surrounding communities do not go to sleep on empty stomachs anymore.

This is thanks to the Hlumani Project which was established by Zuki Dikeni in 2012 as a community garden before it developed into a soup kitchen.

The project consists of a garden, soup kitchen, aftercare for children and a support group.

Gloria Yantolo, a woman employed by the project, said after Dikeni saw an unused piece of land, she decided to fix it up and start a vegetable garden on it.

Yantolo said they cook meals by using what they reap from the garden and dish it up for the sick and elderly residents in Nyanga, KTC, and New Crossroads.

She said before they started providing them with a nutritious meal, many of the sick people would take their medication on empty stomachs. “We prepare proper meals for them every day, from Monday to Friday. What we do not have we get sponsored by Ilitha Labantu,” she said.

She said even though the number of people using the service varies depending on the day, they feed roughly 250 people each day.

Yantolo said they now also offer an after school programme where they help learners with their homework and do other activities with them. She said the project has employed seven people with three working in the garden and four working in the kitchen.

“The community is very supportive of what we are doing here because they see the value it is adding to their lives.”
